How does Server-Guided Ad Insertion
(SGAI) actually work?
To help illustrate how Server-Guided Ad Insertion (SGAI) works, we’ve simplified the end-to-end process in the diagram below. AdBlendr is composed of two key components. The first is the AdBlendr Marker Inserter, which is responsible for inserting “interstitials” directly into the manifest. For optimal performance and reliability, we recommend sending the output manifest from the packager directly to the CDN. This provides a fallback source to ensure uninterrupted content delivery. Additionally, a secondary Marker Inserter can be deployed to create a redundant layer of interstitial insertion, further enhancing system resilience.

The second core component—the actual AdBlendr—is called by the video player on the client-side. Its primary role is to deliver the content or playlist to be played precisely at the interstitial insertion points. This intelligent module communicates directly with one or multiple ad servers to request and assemble the appropriate ad pod, which is then returned and played by the video player. Built on our advanced ad proxy technology, this solution supports a wide range of powerful features, including volume split, device split, promotion management, ad bumpers, and more. Moreover, AdBlendr empowers customers with full control over ad routing rules, enabling them to optimize the use of their entire ad inventory for maximum flexibility and monetization.
